Asheville Spring Family Photographer | The Perfect Wardrobe for Your Spring Family Portraits

As an Asheville Spring Family Photographer, and mother, I’m well aware that a house is not a home unless it’s filled with lots of love and plenty of memories. What better way to decorate than having beautiful pictures of your family displayed on your walls or counter tops? Spring is the perfect time to capture these beautiful moments. Bright colors, sweet greenery, and shining smiles. Here are a few tips for your Spring family photos!

5 tips to hep you find your perfect spring session wardrobe

  1. Kiddos: One of the biggest factors in the turnout of a sibling photo shoot is the wardrobe selection. I know, I know, this is one of the hardest parts of getting ready for a session, but bear with me! If you find the perfect wardrobe, your Spring pictures will be just that much closer to perfection! So often, I try and stress to my clients- coordinate, don’t match. In other words, don’t put your kiddos in the same exact outfits. Find a few colors that compliment each other and create an eclectic collection. Neutrals are always a good choice, as they tend to look great on everyone. Also, I love when clothes are flowy, textured, and layered – it makes for a stunning varied depth! If you are totally lost on where to find beautiful clothes for your little ones, try looking at local boutiques for a one of a kind style.
  2. Parents: As far as family sessions go, the wardrobe you pick is also one of the most important aspects of the final product. Pick out a few colors that compliment each other for Mom and Dad, and have fun with it! I recommend dressing more modestly, and save the funky, unique styles for the kiddos. Always make sure there’s variety in your photos. Avoid large logos and pinstripes!
  3. Ladies: Do you have a romantic gown, a tulle skirt, or a flower crown that you just can’t find an occasion to wear it for? Spring photos are the best time to break them out and show them off! Dresses and skirts are perfect as they look good on literally every body shape. Wearing those flowy dresses and skirts adds a lot of movement to your photos which creates added life and fun to the end result! Although it seems counter-intuitive, avoid getting a spray tan right before the session. It tends to photograph orange even if it is done by a professional. Your natural skin tone will photograph the most beautifully!
  4. What to Bring: During your Spring photo shoot, don’t forget these essential items: flats or flip flops for walking between photo spots, a second outfit (if you’re doing two), touch-up makeup, a water bottle, snacks for little ones, toys for toddlers, and a jacket if it is windy or chilly outside. In the eternal words of Scar from the Lion King, “Be prepared!!” (I know all you parents out there secretly love Disney movies, shhhhh….it’ll be our secret!)
  5. Props and accessories: Adding organic elements to an outdoor session can change the whole dynamic of the collection. Fresh flowers incorporated through floral-crowns bring an extra “wow” factor. Other items that can make your photos pop are vintage elements, fun tree swings, over-sized balloons, precious picnic baskets, blankets, and hats! The possibilities are endless!
